David Bernick

David Bernick is the chief data officer and formerly the inaugural chief information security officer at the ӳý. At ӳý, he oversees the lifecycle of all of the data: where it comes from, what we can do with it, how to move it around, and how to keep it safe.

Before coming to the ӳý, Bernick spent most of his career at startups, with an emphasis on Internet-facing large-scale computing. This began with an internship at Pixar and then as an early employee at the venerable Slashdot. Following these positions, he was one of the first employees of Lextranet.com, an e-discovery startup that he helped grow from five to 80 employees before its sale in 2007. After a very brief “pre-tirement”, he became interested in life sciences and healthcare, eventually becoming the first director of technology of Harvard Medical School’s Department of Biomedical Informatics.

The ӳý soon came calling and he was a founding member of the ӳý’s Data Sciences Platform before becoming the chief information security officer.

Bernick has been involved in various hacker scenes, notably 2600 in Philadelphia and Boston and has written for 2600 Magazine.

Bernick holds a B.S. in computer animation from Emerson College.
