A new view into viruses in the body
Analysis of some of the most common viruses hiding in the body shows how our genes influence the long-term effects of these viruses on our health.

The amount of latent viruses in the body, like herpes simplex viruses (pictured here), fluctuates drastically over a lifetime.
Highlights
- Scientists studied several common viruses in blood and saliva from hundreds of thousands of people, and saw changes in viral load with age, sex, and season for each type of virus.
- They found that genetics influences whether health consequences of certain viruses extend beyond an initial infection.
- Their analysis suggests that a high viral load of Epstein-Barr virus can increase risk of Hodgkin lymphoma.
