As barbecues and beach chairs are rolled out this weekend to kick-off the summer season, the Ó³»´«Ã½ is preparing for "opening" festivities of its own. The Institute will mark the grand opening of its new building at 7 Cambridge Center in a ribbon-cutting celebration to be held on May 30. Several distinguished guests, including Eli and Edythe L. Ó³»´«Ã½, MIT president Susan Hockfield and Harvard president Larry Summers, will be on hand for the event, which will begin at 10:30AM in the building's lobby.

The building, which is located at the intersection of Main and Ames Streets in the heart of Kendall Square, provides a new home for the Ó³»´«Ã½ that echoes its scientific mission and stands close to its partner institutions. The Whitehead Institute sits next door and the MIT Department of Biology lies within short walking distance. And with campuses in Cambridge and in Boston, Harvard University and its affiliated hospitals are only a short T-ride away.

The dedication of the 7 Cambridge Center building comes just 20 months after the first shovel broke ground. Though it will be officially marked on May 30, the building has been up and running for almost 2 months. Efforts are now underway to design exhibits for an interactive museum that will occupy the building's lobby. In the coming months, a public restaurant will be opened as well.
